Group Exercise Class Etiquette
By Danielle Zack, Pilates Director
The Seattle Athletic Clubs boasts over 50 group exercise classes a week! Have you tried one yet? As an instructor, I have a short list of suggestions that will make the experience in class richer and safer.
- Introduce yourself to the instructor before class begins.
- Instructors will notice your presence in class, even if you sneak in and go straight to the back row! So, introduce yourself and inform him/her of any injuries your dealing with so he/she can be aware of your condition.
- Show up on time (means 5 minutes early to set up your equipment). Instructors build their class around a warm-up and a cool-down, and if you miss the warm up you may hurt yourself.
- Ask questions! After class, approach the instructor to ask any questions about an exercise or concept you didn’t understand. Instructors love to talk shop.
- And finally, give feedback! Whether a compliment or a suggestion, an instructor will want to know what you thought. Let his/her manager know what you thought as well because feedback (positive or negative) can only sharpen our awareness and hone our skills to make us better instructors.
We hope to see you in class!

Parent Tot Swim Class
Water, water, water it’s everywhere! It is very important to start to water proof your child at an early age. In this parent tot swim class you learn how to work with your toddler in the water safely. Songs are sung making it fun to splash, blow bubbles and kick their feet. Eventually your toddler will begin to float on his or her tummy and back incorporating arm movements. When a child is successfully floating on their tummy we teach them to roll over to their back. This gives them the rest they need to get to the pool edge and safety. When in or around water NEVER turn your back on your child, accidents happen to quickly, we want the little tykes to be safe.
Parent-Tot classes are one day per week for six weeks held on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 - 10:00am. The next session begins on April 6 – May 11th. The cost is $90.00 per session. Please contact Kelli Zappert at 206-443-1111 ext. 215 to sign up.

Meditation and Pranayama – The Root of Yoga
By Tonja Renee Hall, Yoga Instructor
This month, I want to talk a little about Meditation and Pranayama. These are not Yoga Poses, but the root of the practice. The juice and foundation. Meditation is a practice of stilling the constant chatter and pounding in the mind, and Pranayama are the breath control practices of yoga that help with the stilling of the mind.
Notice I say “practice”, as Meditation certainly doesn’t come to me or most of us naturally! A few years ago, a friend said, “Tonja, you got the poses down. Now, what you need to do is stop moving and sit your butt down and listen to your intuition.” READ MORE...

SAC Elite Golf with PGA Professional Dave Boivin
Calling all golfers, have you played the best round of your life? If not get a competitive advantage with PGA Professional Dave Boivin, and Seattle Athletic Club’s finest personal Trainers, in our individual 6 week golf-specific conditioning program.
This 6-wk program includes:
- 1-on-1 video swing analysis with PGA Professional Dave Boivin
- 3 private 60 min Lessons with Dave Boivin
- 2 Fitness Assessments (beginning and end) with a personal fitness trainer
- 4 private 60 min sessions with a personal fitness trainer tailored towards your golf needs
GOLF SCHOOL TESTIMONIAL:
A couple of years ago I enrolled in Dave Boivin's winter golf program. Dave emphasized stretching, posture and balance. He also paid close attention to developing a consistent swing plane. I was surprised that these sessions could make such a difference. You see, our class never once hit a golf ball - instead sticking to the fundamentals of the swing. When I began playing again in early April, I found my iron play was the most accurate I had ever experienced. By mid-summer my handicap had dropped by 5 full strokes - to the lowest point since I had begun playing. I decided to take the course for the next two consecutive winters.
This past Fall I had developed some disabling low-back pain - probably caused by years of long distance running combined with never stretching properly. As a result, I had stopped running altogether and had limited my golf play. I could not execute a full golf swing without considerable pain. I often could not complete the full 18 holes. My handicap ballooned to the highest level in twenty years.
I signed up with Katrina Yniguez as my personal trainer. Katrina carefully experimented with exercises that strengthened my core muscles and significantly increased my range of motion. I have now begun to run again though not as far as before. I have also rejoined my regular foursome in golf and play as frequently as I did before the back pain had intensified. While I must now do a series of exercises every day (or suffer the consequences) the level of pain has diminished markedly and I am no longer restricted in my daily activities. My golf swing has been modified somewhat to minimize the stress on my back, but distance and accuracy have returned. Handicap is dropping rapidly.
